?? American Student Cooks in Slovenia ?? | Budget-Friendly Cooking in Ljubljana
Moving to a new country is always an adventure, but one of the biggest adjustments? FOOD! ?️ As an American student living in Ljubljana, Slovenia, I’ve had to rethink the way I cook, shop, and eat. Back home in the U.S., I was used to huge grocery stores, fast food on every corner, and oversized portions. But here in Slovenia, I’ve had to learn to cook smarter, shop locally, and stretch my budget as a student.
In this video, I’m bringing you into my kitchen to show you what it’s like to cook American-style meals with the ingredients I can find in Slovenia. Whether you’re curious about how Americans eat, wondering what grocery shopping in Slovenia looks like, or just want some budget-friendly student meal ideas, this video is for you!

✅ How I grocery shop in Ljubljana as a student ?
✅ Cooking American food with Slovenian ingredients ???
✅ How expensive is food in Slovenia compared to the U.S.? ?
✅ Budget-friendly student meals ?
✅ How Slovenian grocery stores compare to American ones ?
✅ What I eat in America vs. what I eat in Slovenia
I’ll take you through my weekly food routine, show you what I cook, and compare it to how I used to eat in the U.S. It’s been a challenge, but I’ve found some great ways to enjoy my favorite American meals while sticking to a student-friendly budget.
? SHOPPING FOR FOOD IN LJUBLJANA
One of the biggest adjustments as an expat in Slovenia is grocery shopping! In the U.S., I was used to big supermarkets like Walmart and Costco, where I could buy everything in bulk. Here in Slovenia, shopping is a little different. Instead of one-stop shopping, I visit different stores for different things—Lidl, Mercator, Spar, and Hofer all have different prices and products.
I’ve also discovered how local markets are a great way to buy fresh, affordable produce. In America, I wasn’t used to going to open-air markets, but now I love them! The food is fresher, the prices are sometimes better, and it makes me feel more connected to Slovenian culture.
? COOKING AMERICAN FOOD IN SLOVENIA
I love trying Slovenian food like čevapčiči, burek, and jota, but sometimes I just crave classic American comfort food—burgers, mac and cheese, pancakes, and more! The challenge? Some of my favorite ingredients don’t exist here (or they’re really expensive).
Here’s how I make American-style meals work in Slovenia:
? Bacon swap → American-style bacon is hard to find, so I use panceta instead.
? Cheese fix → No cheddar? I use Gouda, Edam, or local Slovenian cheeses.
? Hot dogs? → Not quite the same, but I make it work!
? Pancakes → I found the right flour for American-style pancakes, and they taste amazing!
Adapting my cooking style has been fun, and I’ve even started mixing Slovenian and American flavors to create something new.
? HOW EXPENSIVE IS FOOD IN SLOVENIA?
One of the most common questions I get is: Is food cheaper or more expensive in Slovenia compared to the U.S.? The answer? It depends.
✅ Cheaper in Slovenia: Fresh produce ?, bread ?, dairy products ?, and some meats ?
❌ More expensive in Slovenia: American-style snacks ?, peanut butter ?, certain spices ?️
Since I’m a student living on a budget, I’ve had to be strategic about what I buy. I’ll share my weekly grocery costs, how I make my budget work, and tips for saving money while still eating well.
? LIVING IN LJUBLJANA AS A STUDENT
As an American student in Slovenia, cooking my own meals has helped me save money and feel more at home. Ljubljana is a beautiful city with amazing restaurants, but eating out every day just isn’t possible on a student budget. That’s why I’ve learned how to cook delicious, affordable meals at home.
If you’re a student in Slovenia, an expat, or someone looking for budget-friendly cooking tips, I hope this video helps you out!
