The Fake Ghee That Fooled India for 50 Years | The Dalda Story

  • For most of the 20th century, half of India was cooking in a "ghee" that was never ghee. This is the story of Dalda — the hydrogenated vegetable oil that a British giant, Hindustan Unilever, turned into a fifty-year goldmine.
Launched in 1937 and priced at a fraction of real desi ghee, Dalda rode one of India's first multimedia ad campaigns straight into every kitchen, halwai shop, and street stall in the country. For nearly three decades it had almost zero competition. Then the trans-fat health warnings hit, a 1990s animal-fat rumour spread, and refined oils took over. In 2003, Unilever sold the brand to American giant Bunge — and the same cheap fat that built the empire is exactly what buried it.
The brand still exists today, reformulated and trans-fat-free. But the spell was broken.
