Pizza Hut says they created stuffed crust pizza—but that claim came with a massive lawsuit. Back in 1987, a guy named Anthony Mangiello came up with the idea of hiding cheese inside the crust instead of just topping the pizza with it. He pitched it to major pizza chains, but Pizza Hut passed on it. Then in 1995, Pizza Hut dropped their stuffed crust pizza, and it blew up overnight. Mangiello fired back with a billion-dollar lawsuit, arguing they copied his concept. He even demonstrated how their process mirrored his—lining the edge with string cheese and folding dough over it. But Pizza Hut argued their version used one continuous ring of cheese, not separate sticks. In 1999, the court sided with Pizza Hut, ruling they didn’t technically steal his method—so Mangiello lost the case.
