I rode "TRAIN SUITE SHIKI-SHIMA," one of Japan's three great luxury trains, operated by JR East.
This time it was the Winter 2-day/1-night course in the Shiki-shima Suite — the single highest-grade cabin (just one per train), priced at roughly $13,000 for two, with reported booking odds of around 1 in 50.
Starting from Ueno in Tokyo, we traveled through Tochigi (Mashiko) and Yamanashi, enjoying three excursions and four exquisite meals.
A maisonette-style suite, a hinoki cypress bath, and elegant moments in the View Terrace "Ibuki" and the "Komorebi" lounge.
A special lunch by Bentenyama Miyakozushi, a Hitachi beef dinner, a pottery visit in Mashiko, a sake tasting at Shichiken, and even stargazing.
