One of Mexico’s most iconic tacos is actually Lebanese.
Even the song playing in the background is by Peso Pluma, one of Mexico’s biggest stars who’s originally Lebanese and named Hassan.
In the early 1900s, Lebanese immigrants arrived in Mexico, bringing their culinary traditions—most notably, shawarma.
In Puebla, this tradition gave rise to tacos árabes. In 1933, a famous restaurant called La Oriental opened, serving its own adaptation of shawarma: instead of lamb or beef, they used marinated pork, cooked it on a vertical spit, and wrapped it in a pita-like flatbread called pan árabe.
Over the next few decades, Mexican street cooks transformed the concept even further—marinating the pork with native achiote and chilies, swapping pan árabe for corn tortillas, and topping the spit with pineapple.
From that cultural fusion came the legendary street taco we know today: tacos al pastor.
Today, it’s often paired with Jarritos—a Mexican soda acquired and popularized by billionaire Carlos Slim, who is also the son of Lebanese immigrants.
