I had NEVER heard of Tamale Dip before someone told me my Frito Chili Pie Dip looked a lot like it! So naturally, I had to go down the Tamale Dip rabbit hole. ?
I found so many different versions, so I decided to take my favorite ideas from several recipes and mash them together to make my own version. And I have to admit, I was VERY skeptical about this one!
One of the ingredients was canned soup, which I had never put in a dip before and honestly thought was a little weird. But I went with it anyway… and I am SO glad I did because this dip is GOOD. ?

This recipe is not in one of my cookbooks, but I did put together a grocery list for you!
One VERY important note: I made this in a smaller baking dish for the video, but it was definitely too small. I recommend using a 9x13 baking dish so everything has room to spread out.
And then there’s the part that really made me excited about this recipe…
There’s a fast food restaurant here called Taco Sombrero that makes Frito Chili Pies that I have loved since I was a kid. I’ve always known they use Hormel chili, but I could NEVER figure out what else they put in it to make their chili taste so good.

The chili mixture in this Tamale Dip tastes exactly like the chili they use for their Frito Chili Pies! I’ve been eating those since I was a child, and they were even a pregnancy craving during my third pregnancy. So you can imagine how thrilled I am to finally know how to make their super secret chili recipe at home!
