On a special episode of New York's Best Bagel, host Henry Rosoff takes an in-depth look at one of the best bagel shops in the city: Tompkins Square Bagels.
The episode marks the beginning of a series day-long visits Rosoff is making to some of the best and most interesting shops around town.
Founded in 2011 by owner Chris Pugliese, who took years of experience in the restaurant business and combined it with years of bagel know-how from growing up in Brooklyn working in old-school bagel shops.
Everything is done the traditional way by hand, with bagels rolling out throughout the day so every customer gets a fresh one. All the fixing like eggs and bacon are cooked to order. Customers note the generous helpings of cream cheese, even by NYC standards.
However, Pugliese takes pride in not being so stuck in the past he refuses to experiment. The bagel shop owner was the first to create sprinkled flavored cream cheese with the idea of a sprinkle cookie from his childhood in mind. Tompkins also offers a tasty "French Toast Bagel."
The signature sandwich is named for one of Pugliese's favorite bands: "The Weezer" and was originally something of a joke to feed hungover college kids in the neighborhood. It is bacon, chorizo, egg, cheddar, and any cream cheese.
Tompkins original location is at 165 Avenue A, with two other locations in Manhattan and more in the works.
Rosoff's official tasting of Tompkins featuring an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and a plain bagel to more closely examine landed the shop at "9.3 Bagels."
