We almost didn’t make this Portugal trip happen… but after missed flights, passport issues, delays, rerouted travel plans, and 48 hours of chaos, our family finally arrived in beautiful Lisbon, Portugal ?? — and it completely exceeded every expectation.
In this episode of our family travel vlog, we explore Lisbon, Portugal for the very first time with our five kids as part of our ongoing journey traveling the world as a family. From ancient castles and historic streets to incredible Portuguese food, hidden viewpoints, old bookstores, tuk tuk tours, and magical Sintra palaces, this became one of our favorite European adventures yet.
After spending 6 months traveling around the world, our kids begged us to get back on the road — so we packed our duffle bags again and flew from Detroit to Toronto, then Chicago, before finally arriving in Lisbon after multiple travel setbacks. What started as one of the most stressful travel experiences we’ve had quickly turned into one of the most rewarding.
In this Portugal travel vlog, we explore:
• Lisbon, Portugal
• Sintra, Portugal
• São Jorge Castle (St. George Castle)
• Lisbon Cathedral
• Alfama District
• Pink Street Lisbon
• Portuguese Christmas markets
• Historic Lisbon viewpoints
• Ancient streets and alleyways
• Ramiro seafood restaurant
• The oldest bookstore in Portugal
• Tuk tuk city tour through Lisbon
• Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra
• The famous Initiation Well
• Portuguese food and culture
• Family travel in Europe
• Portugal with kids
• Europe travel vlog
One of the biggest surprises for us was how unique Lisbon feels compared to other European cities. The colorful streets, steep hills, historic architecture, ocean views, old trams, castles, and welcoming culture made Portugal feel magical from the moment we arrived. Exploring Alfama, seeing peacocks wandering around São Jorge Castle, drinking hot mulled wine overlooking the city, and learning about the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake gave us a much deeper appreciation for Portugal’s incredible history.
We also took a guided Lisbon tour that helped us discover hidden places, local recommendations, historical landmarks, and authentic Portuguese culture. From Praça do Comércio to the famous Pink Street and Time Out Market area, every part of Lisbon felt alive with history and energy.
Then came one of the highlights of the entire trip — Sintra, Portugal.
Driving from Lisbon to Sintra honestly felt like entering another world. Quinta da Regaleira looked like something straight out of Narnia or a fantasy movie. Between the gardens, tunnels, waterfalls, towers, castles, and the famous Initiation Well, it truly felt like stepping into a fairytale. Our kids absolutely loved exploring every corner of the estate, and sunset over the mountains of Sintra was unforgettable.
And of course… the FOOD.
Portugal completely won us over with its food culture. From fresh seafood at the famous Ramiro restaurant in Lisbon to squid, crab, scallops, warm bread, and local Portuguese dishes, this trip reminded us why food is one of the best parts of traveling internationally. Portuguese hospitality, culture, and warmth made this experience even more special for our family.
